Flat, Sloping, or Cone Bottom Tanks
There are a few differences when it comes to comparing these three different types of storage tanks.
Flat bottom storage tanks are popular and are great for holding many different types of materials like liquids, grain, and more. They are quick to install and do not require any extra costs.
Sloping and cone-bottom tanks are used when you want to limit waist and use every bit of what you’re storing. Typical applications would include storing heavy materials and materials prone to sludging, which are difficult to drain out of flat bottom tanks.
Sloping and cone-bottom tanks are ideal for dry materials, such as grains or cattle feed, as they can be 100% drained out of the tank with a flange or slide gate at the bottom of the tank. The downside to these types of tanks is that it requires an extra cost for a stand and hardware. Tank slopes of 30, 45, and 60 degrees and a variety of tank sizes are available. Umbrella Roof Tanks
Umbrella roofing is an additional layer of protection placed on top of your storage tank roof to prevent weather elements from causing wear and tear to the roof. Roof umbrellas protect against excessive heat to reach the interior space of the tank and rainwater to accumulate. In the winters, umbrella roofing absorbs the sunlight and keeps whatever you’re storing warm. In the summers, the padding of the roof umbrella will prevent the inside temperature of the house from rising and keep whatever you’re storing at a satisfactory temperature.
Self-Supported or Supported Conical Roof Tanks
Self-supporting roofs, especially dome roofs are very suitable when internal pressure is increased. Latterly internal floating roofs can be mounted when fixed awnings are supported, and there are columns inside. When the roof is self-supporting, interior space of the tank is free, and it is more convenient to install an internal floating roof. Conditions of exploitation of inner floating roofs are improved.
It is the lightest and economical type of fixed roof.

Internal or External Floating Roof Tanks
The floating roof is a roof floating on the surface of stored liquid, floating up or down with the level of accumulated fluid. There is an annular space with a seal gland between the floating roof and the tank wall to separate air when stored liquid floats up or down on the roof. This significantly reduces evaporation loss in the storage process. Compare this with a fixed roof tank, using a floating roof tank to store oil products can reduce evaporation loss to approximately 80%.
